Keep Warm with Window Inserts

Got Frosty, Leaky Windows?  Our Non-Profit Can Help

Got old drafty windows? Painful winter heating bills? Sustainable Charlotte can help! We are working with the WindowDresser organization to build insulating storm window inserts for your home, mobile home, business, or organization.  SIGN UP DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 2! See below for sign up info.

The inserts work like storm windows, but at a fraction of the cost, and are far easier to install and remove. They mount on the inside of your house. The inserts are custom made and consist of a double layer of clear plastic film stretched over a pine frame. A foam gasket provides a tight seal against drafts and holds the insert in place without fasteners.  A sample insert is on display at the Charlotte Library.

The inserts are high quality and low cost because they are built at a barn-raising-style Community Build in the fall.

This year we will be expanding coverage and open to residents of Charlotte, Hinesburg, Shelburne, Ferrisburgh, N. Ferrisburgh, Vergennes, Monkton, Bristol and Middlebury!   In addition, this year we are offering extra help to mount inserts in previously difficult windows, such as those in mobile homes.

Pricing is based on size. A medium-sized 30 x 52 insert in pine costs approximately $40 plus tax. Still too much?  We have funding to provide discounts to lower-income households, up to 10 pine inserts at no charge… no questions asked.

What do participants say?…

"Last year I had the pleasure of helping to measure and make the inserts to fit inside a number of my windows in Bristol. I can't tell you how much cozier my house is now! No drafts at all in those windows."- A participant from the Bristol workshop.

“[building the inserts] was so much fun! I met new people, made new friends and saw old friends. Then I went home with my frames. They were a snug fit and notably kept out window drafts! I hope to get a few more this year for the bedrooms and help out again for the volunteer construction day. Thank you WindowDressers."- Robin Reid, Charlotte

“Our window inserts saved the 100 year-old French doors to our screen porch! The drafts from the leaky doors were uncomfortable and expensive, and we were told they would have to be replaced with modern versions. But the huge inserts we ordered from Window Dressers, sealed them up completely for the winter, and still let in lots of light… …Thanks Windowdressers!” -Paul Devlin

If interested in receiving inserts this fall, we suggest you signup now because we will cap the number of  inserts at 200.  Please go to www.WindowDressers.org and look for the Charlotte VT community build.  If you have questions you can contact me, Jamey Gerlaugh, at wd@sustainablecharlottevt.org
